Teach first, test later

When I planned a promo video for a learning app I'm building, the easy choice was to show the quizzes. Questions, scores, progress bars. It looks like an app working.
I pushed for the opposite. Show the lessons.
Tests aren't the product
A test tells you what someone knows. A lesson changes what they know. If a learning app leads with testing, it's selling the scoreboard instead of the game.
People don't download a learning app because they want to be assessed. They want to understand something they don't understand yet.
Lessons build trust
When someone sees a topic explained clearly, especially one they found hard, they think: this could actually help me. A quiz screen just reminds them of exams.
So in the video, and in the product, the teaching comes first. The questions come after, as a way to check, not as the main event.
The same idea outside education
This applies to more than learning apps. Lead with the value, not the measurement of it.
- A demo tool should show the demo, not the settings.
- A streaming app should show the film, not the plans page.
- A portfolio should show the work, not skill percentages.
Show people what they get. Then show them how to check they got it.
